Meningitis Vaccine for Travel — Meningococcal ACWY, Hajj, Africa & Who Needs It

Meningococcal disease (meningitis and septicaemia) is a rare but potentially fatal bacterial infection. Certain travel destinations — particularly countries in the African Meningitis Belt and Saudi Arabia for Hajj/Umrah — require or strongly recommend meningococcal vaccination. The quadrivalent ACWY vaccine covers the most dangerous strains encountered by travellers.

Protects against
Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A
Doses
Single dose of quadrivalent ACWY vaccine (Menveo or Nimenrix) for most travellers

At least 2 weeks before travel for full immunity
Duration
5 years for most adults. Booster recommended at 5 years if ongoing risk.

What it protects against

Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y — the strains most commonly causing disease in travellers. Serogroup A is the dominant strain in the African Meningitis Belt; serogroup W is prevalent in Saudi Arabia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Who should get it

  • Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — Saudi Arabia requires meningococcal ACWY vaccination for all pilgrims
  • Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa, especially the Meningitis Belt (Senegal to Ethiopia) during dry season (December–June)
  • College and university students living in dormitories (required by some Canadian institutions)
  • Travellers to parts of South America (Brazil during outbreaks)
  • People without a spleen or with certain immune deficiencies

Not recommended for

  • Severe allergy to diphtheria toxoid or any vaccine component (rare)

Destinations where Meningitis is recommended

Saudi Arabia (Hajj/Umrah — REQUIRED by government)
African Meningitis Belt: Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia
Sub-Saharan Africa broadly during dry season
Parts of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro during large events)

Frequently asked: Meningitis Vaccine

Is meningitis vaccine required for Hajj?

Yes — Saudi Arabia requires a meningococcal ACWY vaccine for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims as a condition of visa issuance. The vaccine must be administered no more than 3 years and no fewer than 10 days before arrival. A certificate of vaccination is required. We administer the vaccine and provide the official certificate.

Do I need meningitis vaccine for travel to Africa?

It depends on your specific destination and timing. The African Meningitis Belt (stretching from Senegal across to Ethiopia) has significantly higher risk, particularly during the dry season (December–June). For general sub-Saharan Africa travel, our physician assesses your specific itinerary and recommends accordingly.

How long does the meningitis vaccine last?

The quadrivalent ACWY vaccine provides protection for approximately 5 years. A booster dose is recommended at 5 years if you have ongoing travel risk or plan another Hajj/Umrah pilgrimage. Some situations (no spleen, certain immune deficiencies) may require earlier boosters — our physician reviews your health history.

Is meningitis vaccine the same as meningococcal vaccine?

Yes — when travel medicine physicians refer to 'meningitis vaccine' for travel, they typically mean the quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccine (Menveo or Nimenrix). This is different from the meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero/Trumenba) used for adolescents in Canada — the B vaccine is generally not required for travel purposes.
